Before every trip, we invite participants into our space for a comprehensive whale briefing. Using maps, charts, and models, we explain everything you need to know about the whales—their migration, behaviour, and what you can expect to see when we head out that day. And because our crew are all from the local fishing community, they know these waters—and the whales—exceptionally well.
We sail on the largest, safest, and most reliable boats in the area, crewed by skilled local marinheiros. Every year humpback whales migrate to the warm waters of Northern Mozambique to breed and give birth. The islands close to Ilha de Mozambique provide ideal conditions and are recognised internationally as an important breeding and birthing site. Many whales stay here for weeks at a time, this makes it one of the best places in the world to witness these giants up close.

Whale watching supports local economies and raises awareness about whale migration and marine conservation. As a way to reboot this key activity we've shortened the tour and lowered the prices in August by almost 50%. This way we can share this magical experience with as many people as possible.
How You Can Become a Citizen Scientist
Ilha Blue have partnered with Happy Whale to give you the chance to join a global research effort. Happy Whale is a nonprofit organization that uses whale tail photos to track individual whales and their migration patterns worldwide.
Here’s how you can contribute to citizen science:
When you spot a whale try to take a photo of its tail/fluke.
Submit your photo through Ilha Blue or directly to Happy Whale.
Your photo will be matched with a global database to identify the individual whale.
You will receive details about the whale’s history, movements, and sightings.
By participating, you help scientists better understand whale behaviour, migration routes, and population health. This data supports conservation efforts that protect whales and their habitats. There's currently very little data from this part of the world - together we can change this.
